Leh is the principal town of the Union Territory of Ladakh, located in the northernmost part of India. Nestled at an altitude of about 3,500 meters above sea level, Leh is surrounded by the majestic Himalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges. Historically, Leh was an important trading center on the ancient Silk Route, connecting India with Central Asia, Tibet, and China. Improved road networks, air connectivity, and digital infrastructure have helped Leh gradually integrate with the rest of the country while preserving its unique identity.
Leh was for centuries an important stopover on trade routes along the Indus Valley between Tibet, Kashmir, India and China. The main goods carried were salt, grain, pashm or cashmere wool, & charas.
