Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who is on a two-day visit to Ladakh, on Friday (May 1, 2026) said Ladakhis have proven to be the first line of defence whenever the country faced external threats. He also highlighted the upward development graph of the region after attaining the Union Territory status in 2019. Addressing a gathering in Leh, Shah highlighted the strategic importance of Ladakh and acknowledged the courage, resilience, and dedication of its residents in safeguarding the nation’s borders. He noted that the people of the region have stood firmly with the country during challenging times and have played a vital role in maintaining peace and security along the frontier.
The Home Minister emphasized that Ladakh’s unique geographical position makes it crucial to India’s security framework. He said the central government remains committed to the development and welfare of the Union Territory, focusing on infrastructure, connectivity, tourism, education, and employment opportunities. Shah also praised the youth of Ladakh for preserving the region’s rich cultural heritage while contributing to its progress. He reiterated the government’s vision of ensuring balanced development and improving the quality of life for residents across remote and border areas.
